The New York Daily News’ Joanna Molloy concurs, calling Dupré’s advice “as useless as Bernie Madoff’s money tips.”

How can the critics forget that the wise, learned hooker—or madam—is a storied historical trope? Savvier and saltier than the clichéd hooker-with-a-heart-of-gold, the smart trollop has long been sought-after for her worldly advice on matters both romantic and financial by intellectuals, politicians, and businessmen of the highest order. From courtesans of 16th century Italy, like Veronica Franco, to early 20th century urban madams, like Polly Adler and Minna and Ada Everleigh, to “Hollywood Madam” Heidi Fleiss, the public relies on women employed in the oldest business to tell it like it is.

Franco, the veritable MVP of kept ladies in Renaissance Europe, was so straight-talking that there is a biography of her called The Honest Courtesan. According to Salon, her actions had important geopolitical consequences, as she “greased relations between Venice and France by bedding the King of France.” In addition, Franco was a venerated writer and poet, who—much like Ashley Dupré—saw herself as someone to whom other women should listen. Franco is most famous for writing, “Women have not yet realized the cowardice that resides [in men], for if they should decide to do so, they would be able to fight you until death; and to prove that I speak the truth, amongst so many women, I will be the first to act, setting an example for them to follow.”
