This is part five of a dialogue about having a late-term abortion between Ayelet Waldman, author of Bad Mother: A Chronicle of Maternal Crimes, Minor Calamities, and Occasional Moments of Grace, and Elizabeth Weil, a contributing writer for the New York Times Magazine and the co-author, with Dara Torres, of Age is Just a Number: Achieve Your Dreams At Any Stage In Your Life. I’m too optimistic a person to decide that just because some people believe that a fertilized egg is as good as a three-month-old baby, we should throw up our hands. Despite our fascination with Sarah Palin, I don’t think we want to become the great American Palin family, adding Down’s sons and babies born to teenage daughters at a fearsome clip. So what do we do to move forward? How do we capitalize on Obama’s promise of change—and the galvanizing horror of Tiller’s assassination—to move ahead the country’s abortion debate, particularly with regard to the late ones?
I like your plans for starting proposals, Ayelet: laws that protect the right to abort absolutely until about halfway through pregnancy, then “a graduated system tied to different stages of fetal development” further down the line. I like the think tank full of bioethicists, too, though the President’s Council on Bioethics has been disappointing in the extreme. We need new energy and hard, clear thinking. We need a charismatic, brave, and practical leader. Do those bad-ass Emmanuel brothers have a sister? Who’s going to take this on?
Perhaps the best thing we can do, here, is encourage more discussion. What do you say to broadening this conversation to anyone who wants to join? The only requirement is candor. Perhaps from our collective trials we’ll be able to auger down and reach some wisdom. Maybe together we can mature the debate.

I am not a mother and have never had to make difficult decisions about pregnancy, but I really appreciate this honest discussion and your openness. I was staunchly anti-abortion as an evangelical high schooler, but my views jumped to the left after graduation as I learned more about the history of women's health.
I love special needs children and have had the joy (and sometimes frustration) of working with some at an Elementary school. There is a great level of patience, education, and financial assistance that it takes to raise a child with special needs. The same people who are deeply against abortion, I am sure, would gladly return a difficult puppy to an animal shelter if they couldn't contain its behaviors. You can't do that with children! Those difficult decisions have to be made before birth. And I don't believe that there is shame in saying, when it comes to that point, you are not sure you could handle a certain level of disability.

I think the strength of a society, a nation, and a future is the clear separation of belief and science. When science can determine exactly when viability exists, and when we can know when something becomes murder, then we can tell a woman, you can't abort. But when we are in a grey area, an area where no medical or legislative body has been able to determine viability, we must honor the rights of the person whose business it is.
It's none of my business when she believes a life exists or how she decides that. My only business is that my country honors its citizens. Not those citizens we imagine exist. But the ones we know exist. That's our only business.

I'm convinced that when we can honestly and directly instruct our children in sex, love, and the rights and responsibilities of self and others, many fewer lives will be affected by this crisis. I think the only thing that stops us in making these issues any easier, is fear.
