Hello, ladies!

We are very excited to be part of this conversation. First off, we love that Schooled is calling a system into question, because we feel that's what makes for exciting satire. We see the book as part of the chick-lit genre, in which increasing one’s shoe closet is considered a worthy pursuit. So it’s a bold choice for the author to link the designer trappings of the NYC prep school community to corruption. It’s the prospect of owning the next pair of Jimmy Choos or the next wait-listed handbag that keeps the novel’s protagonist, Anna, sticking with the morally questionable (but incredibly lucrative) tutoring work she despises herself for doing. For the bulk of the novel, Anna is obsessed with cultivating and bolstering her identity and self-esteem through acquiring these objects—objects that in this community accord her some misplaced respect from the students and their mothers alike. While taken to extremes in Schooled, the heroine’s covetousness is ultimately relatable to readers. After all, these same trappings move millions of magazines a year. Coveting these items is not localized to one ZIP code. Unfortunately, shopping one's pain away at Bergdorf's is not really fundamentally different from shopping one's pain away at Target.

That being said, in response to some of the questions asked thus far, for us, there is nothing empirically interesting about rich people behaving badly. While our heroine in The Nanny Diaries, Nanny, was annoyed at being paid sporadically and inadequately for a job with demands that grew week by week, she is "ranting" on behalf of two groups: the undocumented workers being shamefully exploited alongside her, and the children, who didn't ask to be there and are slowly being broken.

Having gone to Chapin myself—granted, in a very different era when we worked our asses off—I, Nicki, was really stunned while reading Schooled to learn of the development of private schools into clearing houses for the lazy and whiny. Not that it doesn't feel like a logical evolution from the behavior we witnessed in the mid-’90s when we were nannies to the kids who would go on to schools like Chapin.
