Earlier this year, MTV took a break from its regularly scheduled programming of drunken hookups to demonstrate the consequences of said behavior. 16 and Pregnant, produced in partnership with the National Campaign To Reduce Teen and Unwanted Pregnancy, shone a harsh light on having a baby when you can’t yet vote. The series followed eight girls (and their partners), one per episode, as they transitioned from pregnancy to parenthood. The sequel, Teen Mom, which premieres this week, follows up with four of those girls: hopelessly vapid Farrah; unhappily engaged Maci; depressed and anxious Amber; and Catelynn, who, in the emotional series finale, gave her baby up for adoption.

It’s tough to sink into these stories because the hourlong episodes of Teen Mom bounce among the four of them. Still, the message gets across: It’s really, really tough to have a baby as a teenager. Our young moms struggle to make ends meet, go to work and school, cultivate new or salvage existing romances, and keep up with their babies’ ever-soiled behinds. Most interesting is the depiction of how these girls’ relationships with their partners have changed. Amber and Maci tangled with their fiances in 16 and Pregnant; now things are worse and they both seem on the verge of losing their minds over the menfolk. In a vicious scene teased in the season trailer, Amber shoves her partner against a wall and smacks him. Meanwhile, Catelynn and her boyfriend, Tyler, can’t seem to let go of the baby they gave up. Early in the show, they get tattoos in honor of the little girl. I see the lesson for teen viewers—after you give birth, there’s a baby to raise. But I wonder whether it’s all a bit too intense for the viewers who are the target audience.
