Based on a YA novel by Shauna Cross, the movie stars Ellen Page, of Juno fame, as Bliss, a 17-year-old living unhappily in Hollywood’s version of a Texas town. She divides her time among school, where she’s teased; her waitressing gig at the Oink Joint, where her classmates stiff her on tips; and beauty pageants, which her mother forces her to enter. After discovering roller derby, Bliss slaps on her old Barbie skates and finds her place in the elbow-throwing throng. Most teen movies divide the world into grownups vs. kids. But Whip It contains women of all ages, busting their bodies for the hell of it. We see different body types, un-covered-up wrinkles, even deaf competitors. The movie is filled with sports clichés, like the balance between having fun and being competitive and the battle between the hot new thing and the fading star. But the relationships and interactions—between Bliss and her parents, her teammates, and her best friend—ring true enough. Perfect, if edgy, fare for a mother-daughter movie date.
