Let’s forget, for a moment, that Disney was far too late to bestow its princess crown (sort of) on a black girl. Instead, let’s just focus on the fact that in doing it, they’ve also made a really good movie. Of course it is long past time, but I was far more caught up in the story of Tiana, who has to become a frog, not a princess, to make all of her dreams come true than I was in the varying races of her co-stars.
This isn’t a “Princess” movie. It’s more likely to take its place next to Finding Nemo than The Little Mermaid, because—as Michael Baran said on the ”XX Factor”—Tiana and Prince Naveen spend most of the movie as frogs—frogs that cracked up my 8-year-old and made my 5-year-old turn teary before imparting the lesson of the film—that what they think they want isn’t necessarily what they need.
Tiana is driven, hardworking, and gifted. She’s determined to own her own restaurant and willing to work every job and make every sacrifice to get there. She kisses playboy Prince Naveen, turned into a frog by the voodoo witch doctor “Shadowman,” because Naveen promises to give her the money to make her dream come true (not a moment that bothered me, although I see Michael Baran’s point). It doesn’t work—the black magic part of this plot is a little hazy. While a faux Naveen (his magically disguised former servant) woos a rich NOLA “princess,” Naveen falls in love with Tiana. Meanwhile, Tiana learns to lighten up and realizes that love and family are as important as career. After a few O. Henry moments, and a scary scene among vengeful voodoo dolls and the shadows of “the other side,” the two are united, the restaurant becomes a reality, and all (except for that firefly supporting character) live happily ever after.
During all of that, even while seeming to enjoy the movie, my daughter leaned back onto me every five minutes and whispered, “WWhen will she become a princess again?” The answer: when it’s over, and—since neither character is nearly as much fun as a human—that’s not a bad thing. But neither is it the makings of a true Princess movie. There is no iconic dress, and Tiana is going to make a lousy Halloween costume. My son liked this movie as much as my daughter did, if not more. If I were Disney, I’d have abandoned the Princess motif and sold this one on mucus jokes, black magic, and jazz. Load up, take the family—everyone will enjoy the show. But if you’re hoping that Tiana will take the place of Ariel or Belle in your home, I’m afraid you’re in for a letdown. Tiana is indeed the princess you’ve been waiting for—brave, beautiful, independent, and true. Unfortunately, I think your daughter’s going to think of her as a frog.

(Our princess finds love. Even better, she finds it AND realizes her career goals, taking her prince along for the ride. Tell me that won’t bring a tear to your eye.)

(One rich daddy’s girl, but she’s largely obnoxious, never mean.)
