(Dumbo clearly should have been named “Deuteronomy.”) It's the only children’s book illustrated by social realist painter Ben Shahn, and there’s a vague despondence to some of his drawings—dark silhouettes stalking across a blank page, a pair of troubled eyes looking out from another—incongruous with Reid’s playful tone. But a sweet, portly ram, a distinguished-looking octopus, and other cheerful figures keep the mood light.

The book is, of course, ideal for strong readers ready to appreciate the way words look and sound—in other words, ready for their first date with poetry. But read aloud enough times, it could very well turn a reluctant or struggling reader into a future wordsmith.
