The Quandry of the Wordless Picture Book

The Lion and the Mouse, a wordless retelling of the Aesop fable set in the jungles of Africa, is utterly gorgeous, with a lion worthy of Narnia and a mouse who fairly leaps off each watercolored page. This mouse saves the lion not from a thorn but from a hunter’s snare, adding an element of suspense to the story and a teachable moment for parents who like to include a green lesson with bedtime reading. This is a beautiful book with pictures anyone can appreciate, but I’ve never come fully to terms with this type of book: a complicated story told only in pictures. I struggle—should I create a story? Turn the pages in silence? Quiz the viewing child on picture-reading comprehension? But my failures as an adult reader won’t keep this from being a book my children would grab off any table.

  • Fear Factor: (The picture of the lion being scooped up in the hunter’s net is a little worrying, and even his fall when he’s freed looks painful—many kids will be relieved to turn the page.)
  • Heart: (“Even the smallest can help the largest” is a lovely message, although “good deeds will be repaid” has always seemed a bit iffy to me.)
  • Attitude: (Just lovely warm pictures.)
  • Psst: If you can figure out why the mouse takes home a chunk of the rope the lion was tied with at the end, let me know.
  • If you like this: Hug remains my all-time favorite (almost) wordless jungle book.
