In Sara Zarr’s new teen novel Once Was Lost, Sam (that’s short for Samara, not Samantha) is having a bad summer. Her mother once kept her alcoholism under wraps, but now is in rehab after a drunken car accident. She won’t return her daughter’s calls. Sam’s father, a pastor, is über-devoted to his flock—and his comely youth-group leader. Sam is also a Christian (of a gentle, nondenominational variety), and she has a crisis of faith when a girl from her church goes missing. The community unites for the search and then divides as its members begin to eye one another suspiciously.

The timing of the book’s release is oddly perfect, given the Jaycee Duggard case. But the missing-child story line isn’t nearly as compelling as Sam’s struggle to find her place with her family and with God. Sam’s isolation from her parents and from the friends who can’t stop viewing her as a “pastor’s kid” is affecting. Not every teenage reader will identify with her loss of belief in God. But they still should relate to the loss of the childhood belief that everything will be OK.
