Fear Factor

Everyone’s afraid of something—and for the four kids at the center of School of Fear, those fears (exaggerated for comic effect) have taken over their lives. One faints at the sight of open water; another’s bug phobia has forced her to live inside a beekeeper’s veil. Their parents will do anything to cure them—including sending them, sight unseen, to attend the infamous School of Fear, where the mysterious Mrs. Wellington will scare the fright out of them. There’s not much to identify with among the four broadly drawn kids, but the adventure is solid and keeps rollicking along, and the crazy headmistress and her accomplices offer plenty of quirky humor. Middle-graders who like their books goofy with a kick of goth will like this one (and may not see the ending coming from a mile away).

Heart: (The characters are a little 2-D for real heart, but it’s kind of Breakfast Club-esque to see them united.)
