Fancy Nancy: Splendiferous Christmas may well be the best Fancy Nancy installment yet. The series has stayed strong over the years—even as the brand has expanded to include various other Nancy products (dolls, puzzles, easy readers), the picture books remain the heart of the franchise, and author Jane O’Connor never neglects her most famous creation. Splendiferous Christmas has Nancy applying her trademark fancy to holiday decorations and spirit. When she accidentally breaks the ornate tree topper she bought with her birthday money, her grandfather helps her to make another one, reminding her that sometimes you make do with the fancy you have. It’s a good story—and all the better for conveying Christmas message and spirit with scarcely a word about gifts—but it’s illustrator Robin Preiss Glasser who’s really outdone herself here. Every page is a magnificently detailed portrait of the fancy and simple of the holidays, worth poring over. This is a fantabulous choice off the holiday books table for Nancy fans and series newcomers alike.
- Fear Factor:
(Now, if that toppled Christmas tree had been decorated, that would have been scary.)
- Heart:
(There’s always a sweet message to the good-hearted Nancy books, but it never overwhelms the story.)
- Attitude:
(The only attitude here is the Christmas spirit—although I note that the illustrations sometimes suggest that Nancy didn’t remain as calm through her holiday calamity as her words suggest.)
- Psst: The first two pages, where Nancy’s house goes from plain to Christmas fancy, are glorious, but I hope they don’t give my family any ideas.
- If you like this: Toot and Puddle’s I’ll Be Home for Christmas offers another glorious Christmas with favorite characters, or for fans of the fancy girl, try The Duchess of Whimsy for another take on the fancy-meets-simple story.
