The Duchess of Whimsy is Fancy Nancy as a grown-up princess, hosting fabulous soirees filled with extraordinary guests and glamorous conversations. The easy-living Earl of Normal loves her joie de vivre and longs to impress her, but his attempts—donning fancy dress that doesn’t suit him, bringing a giraffe to her palace—fail. It’s only when he chooses to be himself, by making a grilled cheese sandwich at one of her parties while the other guests hunt quail eggs and spin sugar, that he wins her attention. He can sometimes be a tad fancy; she likes a few simple pleasures. They get to live happily ever after. It’s a simple story but charmingly told, capturing the traditional brevity and tone of a fairy tale (right down to a few repeated phrases) with wonderful illustrations. The Duchess of Whimsy makes for a delicious read-aloud. It’s got a holiday feel but no holiday story, making it a good year-round choice (and an excellent addition to a Fancy Nancy-themed gift).
