Baby Polar won’t come out of the snowstorm—he wants to keep playing. Soon he’s far from Mama Polar, whose cuddly, furry body keeps him warm. Lost and cold, he nestles against a big cave of snow and hears—the beating of Mama Polar’s heart! The cave of snow is Mama Polar, and he is safe. On the plus side, mama and baby reunited. Baby learns benefit of self-reliance. On the other hand, Mama Polar doesn’t seem to have spent much time looking for her missing cub. Call this one the opposite of The Runaway Bunny. It’s a happy, snuggly ending just the same, but savvy kids will notice that Mama Polar looked out for No. 1. The collage-style illustrations are very likable, and it’s got a strong rhythm and is the right length for bedtime reading. But share this one with confident kids. I can see some others worrying a little too hard about this lost baby.
