The worst possible thing you can do for the environment is reproduce. Diapering alone is a large-scale eco-disaster. The average baby goes through between 5,000 and 8,000 diapers before being potty-trained, and the disposable diapers that 95 percent of American parents use make up an estimated 2.1 percent of all landfill waste—that’s about 3.6 million tons a year.
Cloth diapers are far and away the greener option, as Slate’s Green Lantern concluded last year. But the thing is, when you’re juggling parenting with working and occasionally sleeping, you stop fretting so much about your carbon footprint. I initially blamed my husband—an unapologetic member of the give-me-convenience-or-give-me-death school of parenting—for our decision to go disposable from day one. The truth is, though, I didn’t object that much. Our baby peed and vomited through mind-boggling quantities of clothing and linens in his first weeks on Earth, and I couldn’t imagine voluntarily adding diapers to our laundry burden (especially since our Energy Star washing machine—see, we’re not evil!—averages 80 minutes per load).
But I had to soothe my liberal conscience somehow, so I decided that, rather than advance Procter and Gamble’s world domination by buying Pampers, we would use only “eco-friendly disposables.” Most diapers in this category are chlorine-free and so don’t leach dioxin, a byproduct of the bleaching process and the most carcinogenic substance ever identified. They also don’t, or shouldn’t, contain any artificial fragrances or dyes. Still, is there really such a thing as an “eco-friendly disposable"? Are there any appreciable environmental or health benefits to using these diapers? And do these diapers work as well as the evil, multinational-conglomerate brands? I was determined to find out.
Methodology
Finding the all-around best diaper is trickier than, say, finding the best hand blender. Babies’ bodies are all shaped differently, and the variable flight patterns of male and female urine are unpredictable. So Diapers.com sent me diapers in a range of sizes that I then shared with a half-dozen strangers on my neighborhood parenting listserv. (Here's a slide show of the neighborhood babies testing out the eco-diapers.) I also solicited reviews from parents who have used these diapers in the past.
Design (10 points): Does the diaper fit snugly over the baby’s thighs? Does it run big, small, or just right? Is the material soft or scratchy? Do the tabs work well?
Absorbency (10 points): Did every pee necessitate an outfit change? Did the diaper effectively contain what in my childhood we referred to as a “number two?” Could it withstand a long night in the crib?
Eco-Credentials (10 points): What environmental claims are made about this diaper, and does the diaper deliver on them? Even within this subcategory of boutique disposables, some diapers are greener than others.
Here are the results of our testing, from imperfect to impermeable.
