Like aelfric, most readers object to circumcision because it strips adult men of the freedom to determine the state of their own penises. “Because it’s an ultimate solution, the only person qualified to make the decision about circumcision is the person who is affected by it,” BiterAtmonk wrote. Biter and others argue that because circumcision permanently alters individuals’ bodies but is not medically necessary, it shouldn’t be performed on boys who aren’t old enough to consent to the procedure. Eight-day-olds don’t qualify.
They dispute the pro-cutting argument that circumcision is, if not medically necessary, at least medically beneficial. Many of them tried to poke holes in the study that showed that among Kenyan men, circumcision reduced the transmission of HIV by 60 percent. They pointed out that other aspects of Kenyan society, including general sanitation, frequency of condom use, and HIV prevalence, make the men in the study a poor predictor of the success that circumcision will have in preventing the spread of HIV in the United States. And they insisted that if you’re concerned about HIV transmission, circumcision is no substitute for a condom. Plus, when it comes to disease prevention, circumcision hasn’t been proven to have any effect on gay men, the American population most likely to be exposed to HIV.
Several commenters also complained that circumcision is a vestige of a sexually repressed past in which pleasure was considered suspect and masturbation was a mortal sin. “[T]he practice smacks of prudish Victorian morality,” eprice wrote. Now that we believe enjoying sex is OK, the thinking goes, we should shun circumcision along with other pleasure-reducing practices like female genital mutilation.
The question of whether circumcision is comparable to female genital mutilation (FGM) is a touchy one. Commenters seemed split on whether tossing the foreskin is in the same league with slicing the labia. Some argued no: After all, circumcisions on American males are usually performed in hospitals, by doctors. But others said that a procedure’s sterility doesn’t make it acceptable. They said Americans’ simultaneous repudiation of FGM and acceptance of male circumcision was nothing more than cultural hypocrisy. One male commenter battled his wife over whether their newborn son would go under the knife. She said yes, he said no. He won. “My point to her,” he wrote, “was that if our society is so offended about ritualized circumcision of aboriginal African females—what the hell is the difference?”
But interspersed among the all-caps, exclamation points, and other indications of outrage were comments urging readers to just calm down. Several people specifically said that even though they had strong opinions about the subject, their feelings did not rise to the level of outrage, and they were prepared to respect the choices that other parents made for themselves and their children. As likittysplit asked, “[S]ince when is it okay to publicly accuse parents of ‘borderline child abuse’ for engaging in child rearing practices you disagree with?”
