Which natural deodorant best masks the stink?

I never questioned my loyalty to traditional aluminum-rich antiperspirants until the day I found them locked behind glass at my local drugstore. Since when could you make meth out of Lady Speed Stick? Attempts to solve the puzzle online only deepened my anxieties. Your typical aluminum-containing antiperspirant could cause Alzheimer’s? Or breast cancer? The links were widely debunked, yes, but distinctly freaky nonetheless. And how about the estrogenic preservatives, like triclosan and parabens, found in conventional antiperspirants—did I really want to be spreading all those chemicals so close to my boobs?

I decided not. So I switched to natural deodorant. But the clunky bar I bought at the hippie food co-op appeared to have been manufactured in 1972, and I frequently smelled as if I’d been asleep since then. Was it possible to honor my aluminum conspiracy theories without sweating through every cocktail dress in my closet?

Methodology

I recruited two testers—one a natural deodorant-convert who missed the mainstream sticks’ protection (“But whatever, I’d rather reek than get cancer”); another who was convinced she was too foul-smelling for any antiperspirant not preceded by the word “clinical.” We tried out a whopping 15 different natural deodorants over the course of two months, wearing them for a wide range of activities: long days at school and/or the office, aerobics and yoga classes at the gym, trips by road and plane.

We pitted these products against each other, not against heavy-duty antiperspirants. After all, natural deodorants simply don’t work as well as traditional antiperspirants—at least not at keeping you dry. While antiperspirants block the pores to prevent sweat from escaping, deodorants minimize the bacteria growth responsible for stink. So with a “natural” deodorant, you’ll still sweat, but—with any luck—be the only person who notices.

Way back when, the virtuous natural deodorant-user had but two choices: Tom’s of Maine and the Crystal. But these days, natural deodorants come in a dizzying array of formulas and flavors, all targeted at the growing ranks of women who’d rather contend with the occasional splotch on a silk dress than the (albeit somewhat irrational) fear of breast cancer. We assessed a huge variety of natural deodorants on BO-containment, ingredient safety, ease of application, packaging, goop factor, and fragrance. Here are our findings.

Third Place: Solids

Overall, solids performed the worst. While different brands featured different ingredients (vegetable glycerin, aloe, baking soda), odor control was unimpressive across the board. Testers also complained of a “friction between skin and product,” a “sticky residue,” and a “sliminess” immediately post-application.

The best of the bunch was the fragrance-free Kiss My Face Active Enzyme Stick Deodorant, $35.46 (pack of six), which offered decent odor control despite its “filminess.” It carried the natural-deodorant-fearing tester all the way through marathon Yom Kippur services: “I wore it in synagogue all day with a linen shirt (the mother of all smell-inducing clothing items) and still no bad smells!”

We also liked the beautifully packaged, lovely-smelling, aloe-based LAVANILA The Healthy Deodorant … just not enough to justify the steep $18 price tag for a single stick.
