In 2003, when a long-awaited Liz Phair album—titled simply Liz Phair—was at last released, the major-label debut was greeted with some astonishingly negative reviews. Critics were angry that their college radio lo-fi goddess suddenly went crazy commercial. Phair still had the sewer mouth that made many of us love her—among the songs was “H.W.C.,” which stood for “hot white come”—but now her music didn’t sound like a clever girl performing at a dormitory amateur hour any longer. She was slick and sleek, immersed in a new pop 'n' roll tradition.
But the real complaint was a little more essential: Liz Phair, by rocking out instead of introspecting in, seemed to be refusing to act her age, which was just shy of 40. Not only were the songs about dating younger men and playing Xbox and using semen as a beauty elixir, but Phair even had the audacity to pose on the cover with her legs spread wide open and only a guitar lodged between to fig-leaf her lady parts.
It was one thing for Britney and Avril to carry on this way—they were teenyboppers, after all—but Liz Phair! Liz Phair is a mom!
I remember reading the assorted critiques, many of them written with sedulous intensity by women in their 20s who had no idea what it’s like to be 40. I desperately wanted to scream—on behalf of Liz and all of us—SHE’S NOT DEAD YET!
In fact, what I wanted to tell the young reviewers was that, chances are, she was finally alive. Not that I’m stupid enough to say that life begins at 40—there are too many miserable aspects to aging that would make such a conceit ridiculous—but maybe, in some small way, liberation kicks in. When so much of it all is over, one can finally get started. In any case, this is the premise behind Cougar Town, the new ABC comedy that has advertised itself in bus shelters and subway stations by showing Courteney Cox in a T-shirt that reads, “40 is the new 20.” (An aside: Having been 20, I sure hope not.)
You—and the powers that be at ABC—have no idea how much I wanted to like Cougar Town. It pleases me so much to be 42 and have it seem like popular culture is actually interested in what it’s like to slouch toward the Bethlehem of middle age. So perhaps my expectations were too elevated, but Cougar Town just didn’t charm me. I wasn’t turned off—simply saddened by the missed opportunity. Maybe the lack of a laugh track made the predictable high jinks—Cox getting caught in blow-job-flagrante by her son, Cox finding some kid attractive and learning that he is in high school—feel and fall flatter than they actually were. But I suspect the real problem is that network television is not only not Liz Phair—it’s also not HBO or even basic cable. These days it’s OK to be risqué on one of the Big Three before 10 p.m., but it’s not OK to be realistic. And Cougar Town just doesn’t feel real.
It’s not for lack of trying. As Jules, a new divorcée, the truly beautiful Cox actually looks remarkably tired and worn out, as one does after the hell of a ride that is the first 40 years of life. Somehow, Cox manages to be hot and matronly at the same time, which is not easy. When the superskinny actress squeezes at what little flesh she has to make us believe she’s putting on the pounds, it’s kind of believable because Jules’ effort to maintain the facade and keep upbeat is palpably exhausting to watch. When she pours out two glasses of cabernet to share with a friend on yet another stay-at-home Friday night, we’re all familiar with this shut-in’s routine.
