In the past couple of weeks, Kevin Heinz and Jill Peterson’s wedding dance procession video has become an international phenomenon. Oh, the creativity of these brash youngsters sashaying up the church aisle. The ushers gyrate! The groom does a somersault entrance! And what about that dude on his hands with a flower in his mouth? Such sass in a house of the lord, I’ve never seen.
For those without access to a television or the Internet or newspapers, the video shows Heinz and Peterson and their wedding party dancing into Christ Lutheran Church in St. Paul, Minn., to the Chris Brown song “Forever.” It has been viewed more than 12 million times since being uploaded in mid July, and the couple and their friends have already reprised their performance on national television. A version of their dance will be performed on Sunday by contestants in the Australian version of Dancing with the Stars. The video has even burnished Brown’s reputation as an apostle of love, even though he pled guilty to abusing his girlfriend.

At first blush, I wasn’t immune to the grade-school recital charm of the shuffling little procession, recorded without polish, on a single bobbing camera. Only a few members of the wedding party actually know how to dance—they are placed strategically at the beginning—which contributes to the prom-like authenticity. And the shimmering suit-vests don’t even really fit right! That must be Jill and Kevin all the way.
The adoring audience, in any case, clearly believes the wedding boogie was a spontaneous reflection of the super special bond between the bride and groom. And yet halfway through the five-minute video, the magic of the church-aisle shuffle is already diminishing. The sheer size of the wedding party borders on vulgar: What kind of couple needs a baseball teams’ worth of attending maids and groomsmen? And what about the indoor sunglasses-look they’re all sporting? That’s about as fresh as Tom Cruise in Risky Business. Down with Kevin and Jill’s wedding dance and all the other special moments of individuality couples like them chase after. This isn’t really about originality, or founding a durable new tradition. It’s about putting on a kitschy show. Which the wedding industry will then commodify.
