It’s been 25 years since Ghostbusters performed that supernatural feat of entertaining both kids and adults with a live-action film. Now Egon, Ray, Peter, Winson, and even Slimer and the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man have reunited in a video game available for the Wii, Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and other platforms. You play a Ghostbuster trainee, learning the business from the best as you return to familiar haunts like the New York Public Library and the Hotel Sedgewick to do battle with various ghouls. Frequent and entertaining (if long) cut scenes interspersed with the gameplay feature wisecracks from the original Ghostbusters, voiced by the actors themselves in a warm-up to the franchise’s third installment, due out in 2012. Kids who aren’t familiar with the Ghostbusters mythology might find themselves confused at points—if you don’t know who Ray is, it’s hard to follow him. And the game can get a wee bit tedious as you use your PKE scanner to flush out hidden ghosts. But when the furniture is flying and you’re wrangling ghosts into traps with your fellow 'busters, it’s hard not to get caught up in the excitement. A great one for parent-child gameplay.

Fear Factor: (The ghosts, hound demons, and other enemies might give younger kids the willies, but they’re cartoonish and don’t do much harm—slime is the only fluid that gets spilled.)
Heart: (Much bravery but little genuine emotion; a storyline involving a love interest for Peter, voiced by Alyssa Milano, feels flat.)
Attitude: (The cut scenes show the Ghostbusters being sarcastic, cynical, and a little dismissive of their new recruit.)
Psst: Don't even try to figure out where the game fits in the Ghostbusters canon—it's a slightly bizarre amalgamation of incidents from the two movies.
