Princess Protection Program

Packed within an unabashedly cartoonish adventure plot, the Disney Channel’s Princess Protection Program is an odd-couple buddy movie with a nice message about what it really takes to be a “princess.” Selena Gomez stars as tomboy Carter, the cutest possible victim of the mean-girls clique, who works in her dad’s bait shop and resents the time he spends away from her in his role as an officer for the Princess Protection Program (the bait shop’s just cover). When he brings his work home in the form of Princess Rosalita (Demi Lovato), whose kingdom was snatched by a would-be dictator and a small band of henchmen, Carter balks. “Rosie,” she insists, will never pass as a normal American girl.

Of course she will, with Carter’s help. And she’ll teach Carter that princesses think about more than clothes and shoes. They turn the other cheek; they help others; they are unfailingly kind, gracious, and considerate. Those qualities—while certainly not what makes girls “popular”—turn out to matter more to her classmates than Carter realized. And—because this is that kind of movie—Princess Rosie will also teach Carter that clothes and shoes matter, too. And Carter will save Rosie from a reappearance of the villainous dictator, who does everything short of twirling his mustache as he chews through his role. All the adults surrounding Disney’s two aspirants to the Hannah Montana crown seem to be enjoying themselves, as do the girls themselves. Part of what makes the movie fun for fans is that the two are apparently “BFFs” in “real” life, according to the thrilled 13-year-old who previewed this highly anticipated release with me. There are one or two plot holes (ahem—craters), and the movie assumes a certain knowledge of the clichés of the genre. Of course the popular girls are mean and the good-looking boy unworthy of Carter—why explain any of that? But overall, Princess Protection Program is good, silly fun for a family movie night or sleepover.

Fear Factor: (Kids under 5 may be worried by the general’s takeover—there is some very minor swordplay—and Rosalita’s separation from her mother.)
Heart: (Expect a big “awww” moment when Carter tells her Dad she knew he’d save her from the evil dictator, because saving princesses is what he does best.)
Attitude: (The popular girl’s barbs are too over-the-top to convey any real sense of disrespect, and Carter and Rosie triumph very, very thoroughly.)
Psst: Love the Princess Protection Program’s deadpan rescue, island headquarters, and staff. If you’re sitting the movie out, stay for the first 10 minutes—worth it.
