Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian

This sequel very cleverly follows up the 2006 movie with only slightly less charm. Larry Daley, night guard turned entrepreneur, finds out that the Museum of Natural History is about to go upscale and interactive. This means the museum will ship out all the musty stuffed creatures and historical wax figures who, in the first movie, came to life and became his friends. When these buddies are shipped to the Smithsonian's archives, Larry, of course, must rescue them, and crazy adventures ensue. The cast is like an A-list comedy club—Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson star; Mindy Kaling, Ricky Gervais, and Jonah Hill make cameos. Too A-list, since they crack jokes that are so fast and sophisticated that they went right over my 9-year-old's head. The exception is Hank Azaria as Kahmunrah, a megalomaniac, lisping Pharaoh who channels the sublime, campy menace of Dr. Evil in a way everyone can appreciate. The sequel gives Larry a love interest (Amy Adams as Amelia Earhart), and famous paintings and statues also come to life, which is very nifty. Not everyone will appreciate the trivializing of great historical figures—Abraham Lincoln doing hip-hop moves, for example, or Gen. Custer acting like a wimp. But sometimes the historical heresy feels enlightened. Ivan the Terrible, Al Capone, and Napoleon Bonaparte team up to make a great axis of evil. The final showdown is quite chaotic and scary, although boys who relish video games may love it.

 

  • Fear Factor: (Kahmunrah’s evil army lets swords and fists fly at the end. There’s no blood, but the fighting is relentless.)
  • Heart: (Unlike in the first movie, there’s no warm father/son relationship to root for. And Larry’s midlife crisis is not likely to move any child. But the rag-tag crew of good guys led by Owen Wilson is charming enough.)
  • Attitude: (I could barely keep up with the sarcasm and jokes.)
  • Psst: Be prepared to provide correctives on Albert Einstein, the Tuskegee Airmen, and other historical figures.
