Mr. Troop Mom

There's nothing inherently wrong with rewriting a canned plot like "widowed, workaholic dad reconnects with teenaged daughter" or even using tired tropes like "city guy takes kids camping." But Mr. Troop Mom's crime lies in wasting George Lopez and Jane Lynch (of Best in Show) by not even trying to make this material funny. In this Nickelodeon movie, lawyer Eddie Serrano scores in court but can't connect with his daughter, Naomi. When the leader of her faux Girl Scout troop can't make the big camping competition, Eddie agrees to step in and predictably manages to win over the dubious camp leaders, earn his daughter's affections, and learn about himself along the way. This is fine sleepover fare—tween girls will enjoy watching better groomed versions of themselves endure rope courses and scale rock walls while remaining perfectly coifed, and they'll appreciate the cameo by the Naked Brothers Band. A deeply unfunny scene involving the original troop leader going into labor in Eddie's foyer and a dubious subplot involving the predatory mother of a rival camper make this unsuited to very young viewers. But for kids 8 and up, you can turn on the movie, provide some popcorn, and go watch Weeds in the other room.
