What if the aging star of an '80s hair band (the Rockits) discovered that in his heyday, he fathered a daughter (Ruby) with one of his groupies? The elevator pitch for Ruby and the Rockits practically writes itself. Our former star is still milking the glory days with a lame show at an Indian casino, so what will he do with this adorable teen who has, of course, no one else to care for her? Foist her off on his estranged brother and former bandmate, who is now a successful businessman but still enjoys the occasional microphone-in-front-of-the-mirror moment. There will be reunions, there will be teen cousins composing songs together, there will heartwarming family moments. If you were an ABC Family executive, you’d buy this, too, particularly since it comes from brothers Shaun and David Cassidy and stars Alexa Vega, who may be a worthier candidate for the Miley Cyrus crown than current heir apparent Demi Lovato. The result is polished, if predictable, with enough genuinely funny moments (including a vintage faux hit music video from the Rockits) to make Ruby and the Rockits perfect for preteens and fine for family viewing.
