Before Gossip Girl, There Was Camilla

Madeleine L’Engle’s most famous works may have been the “Time Quartet,” which includes A Wrinkle in Time. But she wrote gems that don’t shatter dimensional divides, too. The lovely Camilla, reissued this spring based on its better-known 1965 incarnation (L’Engle wrote an earlier version of it in the early ’50s), relates the story of a privileged Upper East Side teenager more concerned with schoolwork and astronomy than gossip and boys. Her cozy world begins to fall apart when her parents drag her into the middle of their crumbling marriage—her mother’s French lover says that he’s visiting Camilla when he stops by the apartment for their liaisons; her father takes her to dinner and loosens her up with a drink before trying to weasel information out of her. Much to her surprise, Camilla finds strength in a budding connection with her best friend’s slightly older brother, Frank. The two play chess with a war vet left housebound by his injuries, and discuss the nature of God and the heavens. At times Camilla and Frank’s relationship is uncomfortably paternalistic—he talks expansively of “educating” Camilla, though he’s 17 to her 15. Still, two teenagers engaging in serious conversations—how nice. In a teen-lit scene cluttered with Gossip Girl and other snotty lit that fetishizes privilege, Camilla is refreshing. And still relevant after all these decades.

I love party songs. I've seen Poison in concert ("Unskinny Bop" and "Talk Dirty to Me" certainly aren't family friendly songs). I regularly sing along with "Closer" by Nine Inch Nails (famous for the line "I want to karen millen clothes like an animal").
