In The Assistants, a new series from the N (which is soon to be rechristened TeenNick), wide-eyed but ambitious Gillian Young (Britt Irvin)’s interview for a coveted position as a Hollywood producer’s assistant is canceled. Instead of slumping her shoulders and heading home, Gillian follows the big-shot producer into the men’s room to convince him that she’s got what it takes to work for him. To make it in show business, Gillian, along with Zach Del Toro (Zak Santiago)’s three other assistants, must give it all she’s got, even if the jobs don’t always relate to film. Even when they’re stuck plucking their boss’s chest hairs or fluffing office rugs, the foursome retains their creativity and drive, and they constantly chase after their own film industry dreams. The aspiring actor, filmmaker, writer, and producer (how convenient!) network fearlessly, occasionally telling a white lie to get a foot in the door.

We tend to forget that the characters are adults, with adult lives and desires. The occasional sexual remark (like “You’ll never get me in bed with talk like that”) seems out of place, as the target audience seems to shift. Then again, perhaps the show will strike a chord with teens who are just as confused, fulfilling their desires to sneak a peek into adulthood while giggling childishly at comedic mishaps.

Fear Factor: Besides a few heavy doses of shocking predictability, there’s nothing here that will make your kid cringe.
