Diogenes, the story of a dog named after an ancient Greek philosopher who lived a life of voluntary simplicity, poverty, and asceticism, ambitiously attempts to translate some deep, complicated ideas into concepts that 9- to 12-year-olds can digest. While this creates openings to discuss ideals such as anti-materialism, personal responsibility, and living harmoniously with nature, the presentation could easily lead to confusion and misinterpretation.
The story begins with Diogenes the dog running away from home in order to “be his own master.” To achieve this, he sets out to learn what he terms new “tricks.”The first is “to need as little as possible—and want even less than that,” which seems to stretch the meaning of the word trick and is, at the very least, not terribly interesting or even comprehensible to children. He practices a bit of self-torture—hugging statues in winter to learn to tolerate cold, rolling in sand in summer to learn to tolerate heat: hardly good examples to set. He sleeps in the streets, begs for his food, spends mornings in the park and afternoons lying about. He does not work, except to spout off his beliefs to the locals. The author’s attempt to bring alive ancient Greece and the philosophy of Diogenes is something to be appreciated, but even with the delightful illustrations by Michael Chesworth, the book might be more useful to students studying the time period and its philosophers.
