Terminator, Terminated

The Terminator movie franchise is notable for its creation of one of the earliest tough female action-hero characters: Sarah Connor, mother of John Connor. In the later movies, her son becomes the leader of the resistance to Skynet, the computer system that launched the war against humans, but in the first two she plays a crucial role. In a sense, she’s a Mary figure, the mother of the savior, but rather than cast a vulnerable softie, James Cameron cast Linda Hamilton, tough girl. Who can forget her biceps, or her famous chin-up scene? So I went to see Terminator: Salvation hoping to find more of the same gender complexity. Instead, this movie, directed by McG is as conventional as can be. McG is hardly known for his auteur subtlety. But he did direct Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle and theoretically should have a feel for the female action in this film.
Not so here. Instead, John Connor (played by a very buff Christian Bale) flexes his way grimly through the film, pausing every now and then to kiss his very pregnant wife, Kate. She gets to ask questions and make a few comments about the evilness of the new hybrid terminator Skynet created. And to be sure there are a few good action scenes with Moon Bloodgood: We watch a daring pilot crash after a battle with the machines; she ejects and pulls off her helmet to reveal a sexy mane of hair. But this is quickly followed by her getting her ass kicked by some would-be rapists; she’s saved by a brawny male whom she then cuddles up to by the fire, saying “I’m cold.” Yuck. I want Sarah Connor back.

The themes have been unpublished, no release is visible in the project pages, and the tarball archives have been deleted.
The files in CVS still need to be deleted. Is there a quick way to delete all those files

Cameron--does she really count as female, by the way?--was my favorite character on the TV show, even though she was a little under-utilized. I guess she didn't make it to the movie?
The Woman Behind Sarah Connor
By: Nell Minow | Mon, 05/25/2009 - 08:03
The movie's take on its female characters is less troubling to me than your omission of the woman who was as responsible as anyone for the creation of Sarah Connor, producer Gale Anne Hurd. Last year, in a Comic-Con panel on women in action and horror, she explained her canny strategy for getting studio approval for a big budget action movie with a strong female character -- in her mind, it was the story of Sarah Connor, but she let the studio name the movie after the male character who only had 17 lines in the original film.
And I think you underplay Moon Bloodgood's role. She is fearless and resourceful and rescues the males more than she is rescued by them. We don't get a backstory on her as we did with Sarah Connor, who had the opportunity for a character arc, but she manages to show us a very complete and yes complex character.

Before I start discussing my issue with this post, I want to say that I don't think that Christian Bale's wife in the new film is heroic or in any way complex. My issue with this post is the author's use of the term "gender complexity." It is not gender complexity for a film to show a woman as sexy and yet good with a gun/able to kick butt. That portrayal of women is one of the only two options available to women in film, the other being a helpless character. I think this also sums up my complaint about Double X in general, it tends to confuse complexity and power for women as women beating other people up. Feminism isn't just about creating women who can beat up men, it is also about challenging what is considered powerful and relevant in our society. I don't think the sexy heroine character is any more progressive an image for women than the helpless one. For starters, it undermines any woman figure who is not attractive, and it also plays down the worth of women who don't fit the "butt-kicking" stereotype. I personally like to watch movies where women are in charge and self-sufficient, but I wouldn't call that a complex image of women or progressive in any way
