"Project Runway" is worse on Lifetime.

Can you destroy a great franchise in one episode? Project Runway is certainly trying hard. The new season, which aired last night, is now on Lifetime at 10. These two minor facts alone have ruined it as a family viewing experience. Ten is too late for the hordes of girl fans, including my daughter. And commercials on the Lifetime network (Spa Breeze, vacuums, odd vaginal ailments) are just too embarrassing for any self-respecting husband to sit through. More importantly, the show has moved to L.A., and now seems to be aiming for the tabloid reading public’s vision of what life in L.A. is like.

In previous seasons, the first challenge has often been offbeat—make dresses out of stuff you find in a grocery store. This season opened with a runway dress, no extra challenge—yawn. Lindsay Lohan judged, the resident addict broke down, the sneak peek of next week promised they would get to dress an actual celebrity. Also, now we get an extra hour of “behind the scenes with the models.” And finally, they kicked out the oddball, which they never do right off the bat.

Project Runway has always been TV Soulcraft for me. I like it because you get to see people actually make stuff—giant speeded-up art projects that can range from sublime to disastrous. Now, it feels like the craft might be taking a back seat to trumped up, Us Weekly-style drama. It’s only week one, so I’ll give it a chance. But at this point I have to steal a line from Tim Gunn: I’m worried.

Oh, figure it out! The Weinsteins got La Lohan, she only had certain windows of time, and thus, the producers had to make a challenge that made sense for her. You watch TV, you know the drill. And if you don't, well, things must be hard for you.

And anyone with a decent cable/dish provider can watch the show in every time slot. And get Tivo.

East Coast Bias?

I could be wrong here but all of these complaints seem kinda off.

Maybe its my TV provider (or the fact that we're on the West Coast I suppose) but it loked like lifetime is airing each episode 15 times a day just like Bravo did.

If a husband is embarassed by TV advertisements I certainly wouldn't call him self-respecting... perhaps unaware he is no longer 12 years old?

I agree that the red carpet dress is a little boring for show #1, but at least it gives a good window into the deisgners' styles and increases the chances that someone "bad" will go first as oppossed to someone who has troubple working with leaves and grasses. Really this was the only real change that seemed relevant or actual.

Also, its true they usually don't boot the oddball first but that dress was appauling. It was a bad version of something that has been done before. And it looked like she was just going to wing it the whole time. And even more true to PR form, they kept the person who had a mishap and then offerred up a thrown together "unwearable" garment.

And I hardly noticed a difference in the content editing. I have always hated how much time they put into the melodrama of the show as oppossed to the creative work and personal histories. To assert that the clips of the guy crying were anything different from before seems silly. Anyone who cried always got airtime for it and usually Bravo spent half the show hyping up minor spats and emotional outbursts amongst the contestants.

Now I will say if they cut out all of the crazier challenges I will be very very disappointed, but I'll give them time.

Time to get a tivo, then your daughter can watch it Friday night at a reasonable hour and you can fast forward through the silly ads. That's what we do.
