Long deployments are bad for the mental health of military wives.

In a groundbreaking study that will surprise very few people, researchers have found that military wives whose spouses experience long-term deployments are at a higher risk for mental-health problems than their counterparts whose husbands live and work near home. The study, published in the current issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, found that 36.6 percent of U.S. Army wives whose husbands had deployed had at least one mental-health diagnosis, compared with 30.5 percent of women whose husbands had not deployed. Among these diagnoses are elevated rates of depression, sleep disorders, and anxiety; researchers posit that "besides fear for the safety of their loved ones, spouses of deployed personnel often face challenges of maintaining a household, coping as a single parent, and experiencing marital strain due to a deployment-induced separation of an uncertain duration."

This research is provocative in part because it’s the largest study of its kind, examining electronic medical data for more than 250,000 of the nearly 300,000 women whose active-duty husbands were deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan from 2003-2006. As the lead researcher has commented, it’s an opportunity to quantify the stress of combat deployment on military families.

It’s particularly satisfying to me, as a military spouse experiencing a long deployment, that the accompanying NEJM editorial outlines why Americans should care. The mental health of military spouses is actually a public-health issue, since most military families will eventually move outside the sphere of military facilities, requiring civilian providers and services. Although happy spouses make happy troops—it’s widely acknowledged now that the attitude and satisfaction of military dependents can either boost or crush the morale of the servicemember and directly affect rates of retention—this is secondary to the concerns of the researchers.

And that’s exactly why this is landmark research. The study of the mental health of today’s military families, who experience longer and more frequent combat deployments, is in its infancy. Among the few studies that have been published, the well-deserved focus on the emotional travails of military children and the overarching concerns of servicemembers with PTSD have turned the mental health of military spouses into a footnote. In a recent RAND report on the experience of children from military families, for example, authors simply noted that "families in which caregivers face mental health issues may need more support for both caregiver and child."

NEJM’s in-depth look at today’s military wives acknowledges, for the first time, that these women’s mental health is worthy of examination not just because of how it impacts their children, their husbands, or America’s fighting force. And that’s cause for celebration.

benefits of shared experience (and learning)

I'm a Vietnam-era vet and currently work with servicemembers and veterans in the area of education. It is true that there's enough apathy or wringing of hands going on about what one can/can't, should/shouldn't do on behalf of deployed servicemembers, combat vets and families, sometimes based on the apparent deluge of (or in some cases dearth of practical) information on what a "supportive" community can do on behalf of the small percentage of families that are experiencing the sacrifices involved in having a parent, spouse, or child serve in multiple deployments. Data I heard presented at a recent conference compared the declining (and paltry) share of the general population that is serving (and therefore supporting those serving) compared with similar percentages in previous wars/military conflicts involving the U.S. Can't quote the numbers now but know it is below one percent for those actually serving. Perhaps general societal apathy coincides with how little the government is willing to require of its overall population in bearing the other-than-financial impacts of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The personal stake for too many is too little, and their attention-deficit inheres in the lack of expectations placed on the rest of "us" here at home. I read an editorial, somewhere, that when one U.S. senator's son recently deployed, the number of U.S.-level elected officials having a son or daughter in combat theater effectively doubled. With just two (at the time) sitting congresspersons' willing to encourage that investment among their own children, how much actual commitment to social support (in an ongoing and realistic sense) can one expect? The hollow phrase that "When I see a servicemember, I personally thank them" seems the best some folks can do--their spouses/children are no where on the radar. Those of you who are in the front lines of both fronts (abroad and at home) need to educate us (as thankless as that seems and tireless as you must be) just as anyone who sits at the vanguard must do. Those of us who were once "there" and are fortunate enough to still work with those who are "there" now must be energetic enough (and not oriented toward bureaucratic lethargy, or apathy) to reach out to you all wherever we can. Having recently reunited with my husband after his second Iraq deployment, I can't begin to know where to start with saying anything. During his 9-month deployment (this time), I gave birth to our first child. During his last deployment, I graduated with my Master's degree, began my professional career and celebrated our first wedding anniversary alone. We struggle in reuniting because we become more accustomed to living apart than together. What's the Army's solution to my angst or his stress? To encourage us to attend "Strong Families" workshops (during our free time) or other military activities.

How about giving us some certainty in the most uncertain sector of society? If he's supposed to be home 2x as long as he's gone, then do it. Figure it out. And consider that when "goals" for the Armed Forces are made- they are being achieved through people's lives and willingness to volunteer. Volunteers can take lots of stress, but they aren't supposed to be abused.

I think there are no comments on this article so far because people may well think, "Buckholtz knows what she's talking about- what can I say?" When people say, I can't imagine how you do it- I think they can and they realized they might crack under the pressure. Then it's worth considering that those of us who are enduring are on the same precipice.

This study is great, but if it doesn't lead to real changes- then it's worthless.
