The congressional reprimand against Joe Wilson is wrong.

We wake up this morning to a newly school–marmish Maureen Dowd scolding Joe Wilson (again) and praising yesterday’s congressional reprimand of him as a “rare triumph of civility.” So now we have, as our new public faces of politeness and good manners, Rahm Emanuel, the prince of potty mouth, and Maureen Dowd, queen of the wicked insult. Maybe they can tour the elementary school circuit together.

Actually, what this whole affair reminds me of is freshman year of college, which for me happened during the height of the P.C. era. The way the left has decided to skewer Joe Wilson is by calling him a racist. Now, there’s no doubt that Wilson is playing this both ways, apologizing in public and then egging on his scary rabid fans on Twitter. And there’s no doubt that some of his fans are nutbag racists who spend the rest of their time fomenting the “birther” movement.

Yes, Joe Wilson supports flying the Confederate flag. You’d be hard pressed to find a Republican from South Carolina who doesn’t. The big revelations in the Dowd column today come from Rep. James Clyburn, the highest-ranking black Congressman. Clyburn mentions Wilson’s membership in a shady pro-Confederate organization. This is a group that in its early days had some links to the KKK. Again, pretty common in South Carolina. Then Clyburn mentions some “real nasty things” he said about the black woman claiming to be Strom Thurmond’s daughter. At the time Wilson took Thurmond’s side because he had worked for him. He said the charges were “unseemly.” That’s not all that nasty.

We could back and forth on these charges for a while. I don’t want to cheerlead Joe Wilson, he’s not my kind of guy. He’s your average blinkered Southern nostalgist. But is that racist? “Racist” is something we say to get someone to shut up. “Students are looking to us, and they ought not to be able to ever feel that such bad behavior would be condoned,” said Clyburn. Honestly, I’d rather they learn that in America, anyone can call the president a liar and not be hunted down.

Wilson really thinks about you. With all due respect, the PC culture seems to have innoculated you from what white people (Joe Wilson's whites) really think about race and religion. Believe me, it ain't good. Since I'm white, I am, unfortunately, in the loop, and privy to all sorts of crackpot comments from other whites that I'm supposed to endorse simply because I am also white. If that is not racism, what is?

Actually you could have saved yourself a lot of trouble and just looked for the word "racist" in the dictionary. I'm sure Joe Wilson's picture is there.

As far as the Confederate flag stuff, think about it. What healthy culture prominently holds onto the flag of a failed campaign for over 100 years? What type of culture yearns for the day when the pool of competition was artificially cut in half by sexism and racism? What type of person takes pride in artificially hobbling half the population of their country so they can reap the rewards? This is the type of person you are defending, and don't for one single solitary second think Joe is going to thank you for it.

Should this site's subtitle be: "What White Women Really Think"

I am an African American woman, and as I read this article I thought, 'Maybe they should change the subtitle of this site to: "What White Women Really Think" because this article is clearly written by and for whites only. However, I think such a change would be an insult to the millions of white women who understand race with signicantly more depth than the author, Rosin.

I agree with all of the commenters who think that Rosin should completely stop writing about race. She clearly has no understanding of race, racism, or the history of this country. In effect, she uses the same argument to defend Wilson that people used to defend slavery, segregation, and the denial of the vote to women and minorities: tradition and culture as justification for perpetuating the status quo and the defense of one's personal right to be a racist ass.

As a black woman, I found most of her article insensitive, offensive, and poorly argued. Nobody is silencing or hunting down Wilson. People, including a former white president, are questioning the racial significance of his choices and behavior. If Rosin and Wilson had their way, such discourse and analysis would end.

Rosin did not effectively defend Joe Wilson. In fact, most of her article was devoted to discrediting Rep. Clyburn. All she did was reveal how much she agrees with Wilson when it comes to race and reveal how much disdain she has for African Americans.

I'll be telling other AFrican Americans to avoid Rosin's poorly researched and argued articles in the future.

conventionalism

Baltimore Mills is absolutely right - Ms Rosin is so far out of her element (which seems to be whining about how hard the little princess has it) that she can't even fathom the flaws in her defense of conventionalism. For those who haven't recently been in a philosophy class, conventionalism is the moral stance that says moral principles derive their weight from the approval or disapproval of a society. So, as long as one can find a group that holds those moral principals to join, then anything can be justified. Even a child can see the flaw in that (but Ms Rosin seemingly can't. Perhaps she needs it brought closer to home.

In certain societies or families (the smallest unit of society) it is still quite normal to use the epithet, "Kike" when taking about someone like Ms Rosin's ancestry, or culture, or religion. But of course Ms. Rosin won't mind when Joe Sturm of that society screams "lying Kike" at her in a public setting, and has a framed picture of Hitler on his desk, because, after all, in Joe's society, it's just normal. Right, Hannah?
