XX Factor: the blog

It's Not Acceptable to Treat a Woman Like a What?

The eterally awesomely grouchy Copyranter points to a provocative ad campaign from the Rhode Island Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The pair of arresting images features a "woman" as a) a punching bag and b) a slab of meathook-hung carrion. The accompanying copy reads: "IT'S NOT ACCEPTABLE TO TREAT A WOMAN LIKE ONE." Copyranter wonders: "Like what? A woman?"

The ads are akin to PETA's shock-happy petsploitation ads that seem more targeted toward freaking out their viewers than conveying their message. This time around, does positing women as dead meat and punching bags reinforce or counteract the message? Hard to say.

Perhaps this anti-domestic violence campaign learned something from Larry Flynt's infamous Hustler cover featuring a woman being fed into a meat grinder. Not everybody liked it, but who could forget it?

I agree that it is bad. I

I agree that it is bad. I hope you would agree with me that ALL violence is bad.
That being said, public service groups usually try to do the most good by focusing on the most prevalent and costly problems. Do you have statistics to show that the costs for police, medical care and legal proceedings are the same for abused men and abused women?

a bit disturbing

By: Vanessa | Tue, 05/26/2009 - 19:07

I think there's definitely an argument to be made that this campaign undercuts its own message. (btw, there was an actual post here, which one commenter seems to be ignoring completely for his or her own purposes). It seems to me that the PETA analogy is a good one. The group seems to be in danger of forgetting their own message in the hopes of getting attention. All publicity is not good publicity and displaying a woman as a punching bag might not be such a great idea even if you're saying you're against it.

Of course, the fact that the text itself is ambiguous without the pictures is funny but a bit besides the point.

VIOLENCE CAN BE AGAINST MEN TOO AND IT'S DESPICABLE (eye roll).

Quality of message

By: mumchup | Wed, 05/27/2009 - 17:05

It may also be possible that anyone who really should be "getting" the message of the ads will only consider them to be funny.
I suspect that when groups use shocking images to get their message across they end up alienating some of their intended audience. I feel that way even if I previously agreed with the message.

Certainly there are men who

By: mumchup | Tue, 05/26/2009 - 18:14

Certainly there are men who are abused, physically and otherwise, by women. Parents abuse children, some parents are abused by their children, siblings can abuse each other, and on and on. No one reasonable suggests that the only violence in relationships is men hurting women. You say you feel that domestic abuse against men is never mentioned yet I've heard it talked about plenty, even in the media. I agree that we should be frankly discussing all the ways we should be working on treating each other better.
Except - when it comes to public service money, where should the weight of prevention resources fall? While there are men who are abused, injured and sometimes murdered, it's not even remotely as common as violence against women.

I'll leave you to your open

By: Foobs | Tue, 05/26/2009 - 18:20

I'll leave you to your open mindedness...

Sure...

By: mumchup | Tue, 05/26/2009 - 19:00

It doesn't seem to me that you are being particularly open minded yourself. You've suggested that there are XX readers who want to ignore the fact that men also suffer abuse. That may well be the case. But what is the point of complaining about it in this post?
In my post I agreed that men are also subjected to violence.

On the other hand...

By: Foobs | Tue, 05/26/2009 - 13:49

It is entirely acceptable to treat a man like a punching bag. Female on male violence alternates between treated as if it didn't exist and being treated as a joke.

It's a shame that the people who claim to be against domestic violence only care about half of the population.

who implied it's acceptable?

By: xxreader | Tue, 05/26/2009 - 16:12

Or that it doesn't exist? Or that it's a joke? I didn't see it in the blog. Where did you read that the poster only cares about women and not men?

Why is it that every time XX blogs on domestic violence against women we get comments like "yeah but it happens to men too and no one cares"? That had nothing to do with this post. The point was to comment on the advertisement. It wasn't a comparison of male/female violence versus female/male violence.

What do you expect a women's blog to blog about? The struggles that men face? That would be a guessing game.

Would you prefer a disclaimer at the end of every post on this topic? "THIS HAPPENS TO MEN TOO AND IT IS JUST AS DESPICABLE". Do you feel that because men aren't mentioned no one cares?

For what it's worth, I have a cousin that for years was beat up by his alcoholic wife. He finally ended up leaving. It was a really sad situation. It was embarrassing for him. He felt powerless. Western men are taught that it is not okay to hit a woman and he didn't.

So, maybe it would be nice for XX bloggers to post on this subject when the topic arises, as it definitely does exist.

So, knowing what your cousin

By: Foobs | Tue, 05/26/2009 - 17:29

So, knowing what your cousin went through, it doesn't bother you that woman on man domestic violence gets zero public attention? Of course that ad in question only addresses male on female violence; that's all that any of them do. If I were to wait for an ad campaign you would consider relevant to say something, I would have waited forever.

By the way, I suspect that a lot fewer commenters here than you think would agree with the statement "THIS HAPPENS TO MEN TOO AND IT IS JUST AS DESPICABLE." Just a hunch...
