Enough Out of You, Young Levi

Levi Johnston writes about Sarah Palin for Vanity Fair

The juicy bits from Levi Johnston's article in Vanity Fair are now online. The most talked-about excerpt is sure to be that Sarah Palin wanted to keep Bristol's pregnancy a secret:

Sarah told me she had a great idea: we would keep it a secret—nobody would know that Bristol was pregnant. She told me that once Bristol had the baby she and Todd would adopt him. That way, she said, Bristol and I didn’t have to worry about anything. Sarah kept mentioning this plan. She was nagging—she wouldn’t give up. She would say, “So, are you gonna let me adopt him?” We both kept telling her we were definitely not going to let her adopt the baby. I think Sarah wanted to make Bristol look good, and she didn’t want people to know that her 17-year-old daughter was going to have a kid.

Levi's credibility is dubious at best, and it's about time to move on from Palin's potentially sordid personal life. If she does remain in politics, the constant attention to her Alaskan circus is only going to distract people from her lack of knowledge about, well, everything. Levi's continual spilling is actually making me vaguely sympathetic to Palin, especially since he gleefully points out to Vanity Fair that Sarah "doesn’t cook." No female Governor has time to come home and cook her kids dinner every night. I'm over it.

To hear or see the other side of the coin often helps provide a fuller understanding of any given situation, event or personality. Levi may be bridling over Sarah's kibitzing a la her grandchild's adoption and I don't blame him. Even Sarah's preference for fast food as opposed to cooking food is no ad hominem as far as I'm concerned yet it does enlarge the image of the self-professed hockey mom. It's no secret that Sarah is far from perfect. We don't need to Levi to tell us that. But his insider view does flesh out Palin's bare bones public persona.

haven't seen the last of sarah

By: teaspoon | Fri, 09/04/2009 - 07:57

I think it's more likely that we'll see Mrs. Palin as the new face of Fox News before she makes another attempt for government office. Perhaps the limelight is what she truly wanted all along, and political pundits have much greater public influence on conservatives than actual politicians.

Vanity Fair doing no favors

By: P Starling | Thu, 09/03/2009 - 13:52

Between this little hatchet job and Vanity Fair's previous bit of reporting ("lots of Alaskans look at Palin and think of the DSM-V!"), Palin's looking more and more sympathetic all the time. Which I think is a terrible thing, since I actually might move to Canada if she were elected to national office. Perception that Palin isn't getting a fair shake can frame her as the underdog, harassed by the Great Left-Wing Media Conspiracy, and I'd as soon we just didn't go there. So ignore Levi the Formerly Mulleted, and instead remember that this is the woman who thinks health care reform = death panels.

Elizabeth Edwards isn't running for office

By: lorikay4 | Wed, 09/02/2009 - 16:12

seebothsides, are you high? Again, no one is wishing this child harm. What we are asking is that a person who parades their family and values as exemplary either be forthright about the actions they are claiming credit for or for them to STFU (please lord) and sit down.

Mrs. Edwards isn't running for office. However, it's hard to make the argument with a straight face that Palin isn't positioning herself for some next leap into attention and controversy, whether directly in politics or into the media, shilling for stupid, which seems to have plenty of adherents these days.

is adoption "dishonesty"?

By: seebothsides | Wed, 09/02/2009 - 14:57

I'm not as sure as you seem to be that adoption constitutes dishonesty. Such arrangements are always understood; the overriding truth is that the child is loved and secure. There has been no criticism of Elizabeth Edwards' childbearing arrangements; they are private, rather than secret. And perhaps understanding such a distinction is indeed in the best interests of the country as well as the child, as well as constituting an important part of intellectual development.

good of the baby different question than country's best interest

By: lorikay4 | Wed, 09/02/2009 - 14:38

No one is wishing harm on any infants. Please. However, the moment that la Palin plunked her family onto the stage next to her as Exhibit A of her Hockey Mom bona fides, SHE made them and their conduct fair media game. And so lies, including this putative, planned one regarding adopting Bristol's baby, are part of that story. You don't get to say "I and my family are exemplars of family values" one minute and then say "My family is off limits! We expect privacy." the next. It doesn't work that way.

So yes, the lie, if it happened, matters. And I'm not really thinking that this child faces any risks of neglect, other than intellectual.

Palin's adoption idea

By: seebothsides | Wed, 09/02/2009 - 14:13

...is the oldest, and one of the best, solutions for this kind of family dilemma. For hundreds of years, beleaguered families have practiced inhouse adoptions to help out young mothers and their babies. Great happiness can result from this loving fosterage, and great misery can be mitigated. It's never much of a secret, but it saves feelings. Why not leave these people alone? They are an American family. As far as the cooking, I'll wait breathlessly for the All-Governors Home Cookbook.

Leave Britn--Palin alone!

By: Punditus Maximus | Wed, 09/02/2009 - 13:41

Of course she covered it up; that's why the rumor that Trig wasn't hers came about in the first place, because of Bristol's convenient absence from school.

Remember, Palin's attraction to her dimwitted admirers comes from her personality and life story. The more we can establish her as a talentless climber, the less generous they will be in forgiving her manifold sins. Levi is, weirdly enough, doing this nation an incredibly valuable service. Now let's see if he can use the money he gets from doing so to save his son and the baby's mother from the daily horror of living under Sarah Palin's thumb.
