Do Men Really Marry Their Mothers?

To all you young men out there swearing to mom this Sunday that when you grow up, you'll be lucky to find a woman just like her, and to all you moms out there who believe what your sons are telling you, we are about to burst your bubble. Christine Whelan, a professor of sociology at the University of Iowa, has been analyzing results of a survey taken steadily by college students over the last seven decades asking what they want in a mate.

Men, it turns out, are increasingly interested in an educated woman who is a good financial prospect and less interested in chastity. Women are increasingly interested in a man who wants a family and less picky about whether he's always Mr. Nice Guy.

In the latest survey, Whelan included questions about a mother's work history. She hypothesized that men whose mothers didn't work wouldn't care so much about smarts or good financial prospects. (Which is also what I've always assumed).

Well, it turns out the differences are slight. Men who grew up with stay-at-home and working mothers ranked "education, intelligence" among the top six traits they want in a mate, and "good financial prospects" among the top 12. Now that's progress.

thats good progress but the point is whats so wrong if men dont consider financial/career/education prospects in a potential wife/gf

why are men made to feel ashamed if they dont consider them to be important criteria.

whats wrong if a man makes enough money to support a wife and kids comfortably and is looking for a woman who is willing to be a housewife? i mean he is not going to CREATE a woman who has little career prospects, did he?

this question is less relevant today because life is tough and in most cases requires both partners to work. so it just makes sense. it more a need of the day than a PREFERENCE of men. but this issue is relevent to men with good income and also in other countries than USA, where a single working family member with a decent income can support the whole family, hence a considerable number of men preferring stay at home housewives.

to be honest, if im making 120K a year, ill look for a woman who is willing to be a housewife and dont worry, most women making even 30K wont give up their careers for me. only those with little career prospects will consider this option....just trying to demonstrate how women make choices to stay at home.
