Green Bulb Blues

One night a few years back I visited a friend's apartment, always cute and charming in the light of day. Something was, how shall I say, different.

Me: "Are we having people over or performing open heart surgery?"

Her: "What are you talking about??"

Me: "Those lights ... I feel like I'm in a bodega at 3 a.m."

Her: "My mom brought me a bunch of compact fluorescent light bulbs from Sam's Club! They're super energy-efficient."

Oh. I'm going out on another limb here (having already offended my dear Auntie by knocking accordion shades!) to say I'd rather sit alone in the dark than under one of these Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFLs). Seriously, I know they last for milennnia and will save the planet and put an extra Andrew Jackson in your pocket every year, but is that worth zapping all the color out of your living room? Or your face's pallor in the bathroom mirror? So depressing!

Call me oversensitive—I can't even abide those incandescent "Reveal" bulbs and would prefer a 25-watt pink glow in every room—but lighting concepts can make or break a room, not to mention parties and, erm, romantic encounters. Catherine Deneuve says women eventually have to choose between their face and their rear; must I really choose between my soft and inviting apartment and the polar icecaps?

DISHCUSS.

The use of projectors are not

By: Kamil | Mon, 07/20/2009 - 01:58

The use of projectors are not only common in offices, but also in homes as well. Projectors are ordinarily used in offices when there are presentations or conferences where visuals are needed for more effective illustration. For this purpose, there are a large array of projector models from which to choose. On the other hand, many households in the U.S. own at least one type of projector.

Preaching to the choir . . . .

By: KRB | Tue, 06/23/2009 - 12:01

so right Nick, so right. Besides the sickly light color(and yes I have tried almost every CFL variation out there and am willing to try more) the dimming issue is a dealbreaker for me. Almost every switch in my apartment has a dimmer(including the bathroom) and the "dimming" CFLs act more like 3way bulbs, so they are really a no-go. I think I will just have to stockpile incandescent bulbs in my bunker . . . .

Wowee

By: Nick Olsen | Fri, 06/19/2009 - 15:39

Ooof, this is all very educational and EXACTLY what I wanted!  Should've mentioned that right now we have one lamp in our office using standard CFLs, still can't bear to turn it on, same for the Ikea candlestick lamps in my bedroom, purchased because I (stupidly) didn't know they only take their bulbs. Woops.  Still not convinced of any aesthetic improvements or brand variation. Had NO clue about the toxic waste factor or the incandescent phaseout, both quite horrifying.  So thanks!  MrsV, all I can say is the headline "Interior Designers hate energy-efficient lighting" would actually be quite accurate based on unscientific field research I've conducted. But any news outlet wanting to quote me should read my first post/manifesto where I say I only care about pretty. Oh and if I recall correctly the friend I "insulted" came back with "Yeah? Well you're fat!" and then we both laughed and I still turned off her lamps.  No love lost over lighting.  Happy weekend, folks!

Too Late..

"Hopefully manufacturers will continue to develop better CFLs before we're all forced to use them exclusively!"

Unfortunately, this has already begun - my grocery store no longer carries incandescent.

Whoa, negativity

By: karenk | Fri, 06/19/2009 - 07:24

Isn't this blog meant to be one designer's lighthearted look at decor? If you are searching for accurate technical information, a blog is not the best resource, no matter who it's written by. Please, Nick, continue to entertain us and share your opinions!

It's difficult to find CFLs with a warm temperature -- certainly NOT your average bulb at Home Depot. Hopefully manufacturers will continue to develop better CFLs before we're all forced to use them exclusively!

stupid comment

By: Anon | Fri, 06/19/2009 - 00:10

The blogger fully acknowledges the importance of finding ways to lower energy consumption. There was nothing "irresponsible" or "inane" about his post. It was about an aesthetic judgment. And that judgment is right.

I have seen Nick's decorating (it's been published), and based on that, I trust his aesthetic. And that's what I read this blog for. For information on CFL bulbs, you can go to a million other websites.

As for specific claims, the "warmer" CFL bulbs are still not as warm as conventional incandescent bulbs. They just aren't. Even Consumer's Reports, a staunch supporter and careful rater of CFL bulbs, admits this.

stupid article

By: MrsV | Thu, 06/18/2009 - 13:58

Why would you write a post about something that happened with a developing technology "a few years back" as if it is relevant today? If interior design is actually your profession or specialty, why are you not aware that CFLs which cast a glow similar to traditional lighting have been readily available to the mass market for years? We put CFLs in every lamp in our house in September 2006, including the ones on our bedside tables, and have been very happy with them. (Also haven't had to change a lamp in all that time, either.) My place won't be in a magazine any time soon, but it is cozy and inviting and definitely not overlit.
If you really wanted to write a piece you should tag as "green design," you could have written about how much CFLs have improved since the time you went to your friend's house and insulted her, as described by Lighting Wizard. And you also could have provided information about how to properly manage them when they burn out, as Miriam has done. (NB: If there's no IKEA where you live, look for "household hazardous waste" service in your town. Many local governments have this in the form of special events or permanent facilities. Also try www.earth911.com.)
With the rise of legitimate journalism outlets quoting bloggers, especially ones on mass-marketed sites like this one, you have an obligation to write responsibly. Next thing you know, your inane post will become the headline "Interior Designers hate energy-efficient lighting."
